Reproductive Freedom Day
Save the date for our 9th annual advocacy day!
Tuesday, March 22, 2011
Sacramento Convention Center
Thank you to everyone who came out on March 18th to make this year's Reproductive Freedom Day a huge success! RFD is always a great opportunity to network and learn more about policy advocacy, but it just a first step. We hope that you will be inspired to build on the experience and continue to communicate with your legislators on the sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice issues that matter most to you and your community.

This year our legislative visits focused on the California Budget and the impact of proposed cuts on the health and well-being of women, our families and communities. More than 150 people met with legislators to tell them how the budget cuts are hurting us, and to ask that they make sure revenue sources and smart budget reforms and cuts are part of the budget negotiations. We cannot balance the budget on the backs of low-income women and communities of color! If you aren't sure who your California legislators are, go to http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/yourleg.html and enter your home zip code. Sometimes a zip code includes more than one district and therefore more than one legislator. If you don't know which person is your legislator, try entering your address here: http://192.234.213.69/lmapsearch/framepage.asp
You may not be able to get to Sacramento very often, but you can build a strong local relationship by visiting your legislator in his or her district office. District staff are available throughout the week, and legislators are most likely to be in district on Fridays and during breaks. Download tips for scheduling visits here: Requesting a Meeting (pdf).
Write a letter to your legislator! You can write a letter to urge her to take a certain position on a specific policy, to share your concerns and ideas about an issue, to follow up on a previous conversation you've had, or to thank him for a past action that you supported. Whenever possible, we recommend that you HANDWRITE your letter for the most impact. Legislators take your input more seriously when they see you took the time to write out the letter.
